Wollongong - A Hidden Gem in Sydney

Don’t you love finding places you never knew existed and they end up being one of your favorite places to visit? That’s Wollongong. A perfect destination that has everything, from the beach, to shops, places to learn and explore, good food and nature. Wollongong has everything going for it and is only an hour and a bits drive from Sydney (takes you longer to drive around Sydney generally).

The drive to Wollongong from Sydney is beautiful. As you drive you can catch a glimpse of the ocean through the dense bushland that surrounds the freeway. Closer to Wollongong you then have the choice of the scenic route or the direct. My favorite is the scenic route, which basically speaks for itself. Trust me.

The accommodation is endless in Wollongong and the surrounding suburbs. From caravan parks to 5 star hotels, there is something for everyone. Novotel and Wollongong Surf Leisure resorts are my two go to options. One at one end of the scale and the other at the other end, but guess what they both have?…. A fantastic location on the beach. The best!

There is so much variety in places to eat. Leagues club after leagues club. Take your pick. Try a new one each night. Of course, you want to know my favorites, Kiama Leagues Club, Dapto Leagues Club and The Fraternity Club. The Fraternity Club has so much on offer for families other than dinner, it’s unbelievable. Shows for kids, kids club and more. The list is endless.

What now? I guess places to visit in Sydney to keep you entertained on the days it might rain and the beach isn't the most appealing place to be. Where to start is the question.
Two awesome little museums are Illawarra Light Railway Museum and Illawarra Museum. They are different so don’t get them confused. Informative and fun. The Railway one you can even ride a train on certain days! Other cool places to check out with the kids are, Flip Out, Hangdog Indoor Climbing Centre, Trees Adventure, Break Out Escape Rooms and Revolution Laser Arena.

Now for that relaxing swim and walk along the beach. Take your pick. Drive down the coast and find a new one every time. If you want my pick … Kiama Surf Beach. Easy to park at, beautiful little inlet and all round nice beach.

If you don’t put Wollongong on your list as your next holiday destination there is something wrong. Do it, you won’t regret it. And for these things kids will love you forever (but don’t tell everyone)!!!
